-
- A500.. sigh. :) I'll try to answer a few of the questions, I am sure many
- others will also try to help out. Here we go..
-
- > * Can I download Amiga software from my PC, and write disks
- > that the client's A500 can read?
-
- This depends on the software on the Amiga. Utilies such as "Dos-2-Dos"
- and "MezzyDos" will read PC 720 DD formated disk on the A500.
- With AmigaOS 2.1 and upwards (most standard/old A500 have AmigaOS 1.2/1.3)
- there's a commodity called CrossDOS that will do the same, but prettier.
-
- > * Are there Amiga emulators for the PC?
-
- Yes. UAE. It will work, it's slow.. and yer still stick with one
- problem, the PC can't read Amiga formated disks. UAE is the first
- Amiga Emulator ever, and it's still under development.
-
- > * How do you list disk contents from AmigaDOS boot window?
-
- Boot window? Hmm, not quite sure what you mean.
- "List" and "dir" will do what you want. example:
-
- dir df0: (will directory list all files on the internal drive)
- dir (will list the files in the current directory)
-
- > * Can one kludge up a +512k RAM upgrade board for the A500,

- > and many of his disk titles need 1M RAM.
-
- No.
- There's however special 512KB boards available. 40USD perhaps.
-
- > * How does one add a hard drive? MFM, IDE or SCSI? Cable

-
- Two ways.
- The most common is to plug in a "box" on the left side of the A500.
- this box contain the controller, usually SCSI, but IDE is also common.
- The Harddrive (standard "PC" drive) will also be inserted in this box.
- The other way is an internal interface, only to be found on the used
- market, among the rest of much other A500 stuff. Unless you travel to
- Europe, were Amiga hardware and software is much easier to find. (see sig)
-
- The Amiga is AUTOCONFIG(tm). A sort of (better than) "Plug N' Play".
- After plugging in this Harddrive "box", you will only need to run the
- "HD-prepper" supplied on disk from the HD-maker to activate/format it.
-
- Most Amiga 500 Harddrive "boxes" also have the option of adding extra
- RAM on the controller, usually with standard 30pin SIMM's.
-
- RochTech, GVP, and Supra are three companies that made/makes A500 HD's.
-
- >Strange mixture of brill sound, neat graphics (all working in only
- >512k RAM!) and slow diskette dependency... love to hard drive it
-
- Get AmigaOS 2.x or 3.1, a Harddrive 50MB or more.. 4 MB extra SIMM
- memory and it will fly. :) Try comp.sys.amiga.marketplace for a good deal.
-
- [Reality mode ON]
- Look, the A500 is now 9 years old.
- Adding them extra 512KB RAM board would feel okay, it's worth it.
- Going further and adding a Harddrive, more memory and a new version of
- the OS, which the client would have to do if he/she wants to bring it
- up to at least some of todays standards; It will cost. Is it worth it?
-
- If your client decides not to upgrade with a HD, ca 4MB more RAM and
- a new OS version, then he/she can't come and say "hey, I can't find any
- software for my A500" because all modern s/w require a HD, 4MB RAM and
- AmigaOS 2.0 or better, many even require a faster processor.
-
- So, 512KB extra mem.. fine.
- Want to do more? DON'T unless it's really cheap. Instead; Buy a new (or used)
- Amiga 1200 which features the current standard; AGA chipset with 16.8 million
- cols, AmigaOS 3.1, internal IDE harddrive interface, 2MB video/sound RAM.
- 68020 processor. Internal expansion port for even faster processors/memboards.
- It's upgradable to PowerPC. PCMCIA slot. And most old software will work on it.
-
- A used Amiga 3000 is also a great choice. A GREAT machine. Superb.
- "Why not buy a normal PC instead?" Well, it's a matter of good taste. :)
-
- [Reality mode OFF]
-
- If you don't happen to find anything in the states.. we have everything
- your client would like to have. From 512KB Ramboards, to Amiga 4000 Towers. :)
